Ok, you can’t talk about semi-autos without talking about the Glock… And since I am in the market for a semi-auto 9mm, it wouldn’t be right to overlook the Glock brand… As i said above, I’m not a huge fan of pistols without a manual safety mechanism, but lots of discussions over the past few months have made me realize that weather there is a switch or not, the gun is not going to fire without someone pulling the trigger… Guns just don’t go off… So that opens me up to a large market, and I’m going to start with the Glock.

Glock makes a total of 4 different 9mm hanguns for sale in the US. One of those is a competition model (Glock 34) and another is a sub-compact (Glock 26). Those are two I am not interested in, I have no need for a competition handgun, and I am not interested in the small size of the sub-compact. So I’m going to focus primarily on the Glock 17 and the Glock 19.

The Glock 17 was the first pistol manufactured by Glock. It has been around for plenty long enough to be a tried and tested weapon. I personally have fired the Glock 17 and for some reason it didn’t strike my fancy. I will concede that this was many years ago, and long before I was actually interested in purchasing a 9mm.

The Glock 19 is the compact version of the Glock 17. The primary differences are a smaller magazine (2 less rounds) and smaller dimensions. In all, the 19 is .47 inches shorter in length, with a barrel that is also .47 inches shorter. The 19 is also .43 inches shorter in height, both models are the same width.

What I know about the Glock pistols are this:

1) They are utterly reliable. I have heard of people shooting 30,000+ rounds through them without a hitch.

2) They are damn near indestructible. You can drop them, cover them in dirt, not clean them, get them wet, they will still work fine

3) They aren’t very expensive. Used ones can go for less than $300

In all, they are still on my list of weapons to consider purchasing.

One of the things I plan on doing within the next few months will be to build my first AR-15. I’ve already done a good bit of research on the parts that I want to use, and have for the most part decided on the setup. I will post pictures of the build as it happens.

One thing I do want to get done is to get this put on the lower some how. I’m not sure if I will need to get it engraved or if a simple sticker will do, but damn it looks cool.

Want to buy a 9mm?

Ok, so I am looking at purchasing my first 9mm and frankly I have no idea what I want. Its main purpose will be for making noise at the range, though I will be keeping it in a quick access safe next to my bed for home defense purposes. For a while, I’ve been under the thought that I HAD to have something with a manual safety, but lately, I am becoming more open to the idea of a weapon without one. So, I’m gonna go through a list of the ones that have caught my eye.

Ruger

Another brand name that everyone is familiar with is Ruger. Now my first hearing of the Ruger name is probably because of the Ruger Blackhawk, yeah, you know, the monstrosity of a revolver that was featured in every old western that ever aired on Saturday afternoon TV when you were a kid… To my delight, Ruger also makes well thought of semi-autos. I recently read an article about the new Ruger SR-9 (more on that later) and that peaked my interest in the brand. Ruger has 3 current model 9mm pistols offered, the SR-9, the P89 and the P95, a quick browsing of gunbroker also shows older P85 series pistols available.

The P85

The P85 was the first design of a 9mm ruger made and was intended to compete for the military contract to replace the 1911 as a service weapon but development didn’t finish in time. Several rounds of improvements later, and the “improved” model the P89 was released. Basically, the P89 is a newer version if the P85 with larger levers, a firing pin block, and better accuracy.

The P95

Released in 1995, the P95 was the first polymer framed pistol that Ruger made. The frame actually has no metal inserts in it, unlike many of the polymer pistols of the time. It also uses a different recoil mechanism than the P8x series resulting in less recoil. It is also smaller and lighter than the P89 series.

The SR-9

Released only a month ago, this is one that I’ve actually held in my hand. It is Ruger’s first striker fired pistol, bringing Ruger up to par with some of the older striker fired designs. Again, I’ve held this one, its light (less than 28Oz.) feels good in my hand, and the action seems very smooth. It has a 17 round magazine making it wonderful for home defense, plus it has a manual safety which I like. And Ruger decided to add in a reversible back strap so that you can tailor the grip to you liking. The only thing I don’t like about it is that it has a stainless slide, which I’m not super crazy about.

I am not super crazy about the P series pistols though with a price tag under $400, they cant be ruled out. The SR9, with its $500 or so price tag, is another contender for my first purchase.

I created another blog. The old one died, damn… This one will be different from the heavy political ones ive done in the past, I’m probably going to focus more on my own interests, mostly firearms and computers.
